Doosan Group’s Yonkang Foundation (Chairman Y.H. Park) announced on April 4 that it will award a scholarship to Hyeok Lee (13, sixth grader at Sunhwa Arts School), who is musically gifted but lacks opportunities to nurture his dream due to his family’s financial difficulties.
Lee has displayed outstanding talent on the piano and violin since a young age, and has swept up numerous prizes in music competitions. Because of his family has limited financial resources, he has had no chance to take quality lessons.
Yonkang Foundation has decided to support Lee because his acquaintance, who regretted the fact that Lee lacked decent opportunities to develop his talent, asked the foundation for support. Upon learning about Lee, Chairman Park, who also serves as chairman of the Korean Business Council for the Arts, instructed foundation staff to find a way to help him. As a result, the Yonkang Foundation held a ceremony to award Lee with a certificate of scholarship, promising to fund him until his graduation from college. The foundation will provide him with a scholarship amounting to about US$ 250,000 over the next few years.
Lee has said he wishes to become a great conductor after studying composition. A source at Yonkang Foundation said, “No one knows how great a musician he will become. What is important is not the outcome but the opportunity he has to nurture his dream to the greatest extent possible. Yonkang’s support is intended as a ‘big cheer’ for his dream.”
